ADVENT 2001

12/02/2001: in the thin shaft of yellow light in the early morning on the black and blue and red of the large abstract painting by John Ford, “Crossover”; and, in the evening, in the “Cheerio” at the edge of a mahogany wood panel in the parquet floor of St. Mary’s Church with another in the center of a panel at a 45 degree angle to it, as the first candle of the Advent wreath is lit;

12/03/1001: in the sign for I91with the “1” at a 45 degree angle to the “9”, forming a right triangle with the base; and later, in the piece of  junk, probably from an auto bumper, in the driveway of a post office, pointing to the blue letters inside a white oval of a car wash sign;

12/04/2001: in the calling card on the front steps of St. Stanislaus Church for a bar on Humphrey Street, announcing the times of Happy Hour, and in the paper wrapper on another step for some pill, the front and back folded upright into a small tent or triangle; and in the afternoon, on a sidewalk in Woodbridge, three small square pieces of paper folded in half into triangles;

12/05/2001: in the three trailer trucks, driving in tandem in the center lane on I95, passing a large billboard on the right painted white; and in the flashing lights of a “God bless America” sign in Milford, the top and bottom of the “o” unlit, forming two mini twin towers of parallel lines between the “G” of  God and the “d” if devil;

12/06/2001: in the 3 drops from the faucet, just after the brushing of teeth and just before retiring, heard while thinking there was no evidence today;

12/07/2001: in the home made sign: “Xmas trees for Sale”, bent at an angle with a nearby telephone pole; and, later, in the wire on the parking lot pointing to a vacant handicapped parking space; and, still later, in the same wire, having moved 90 degrees, to point to an approaching vehicle;

12/08/2001: in the crane lifting a dry wall through a square second floor window at a 45 degree angle, bisecting it into two right triangles; and in the square piece of paper in a driveway with one edge pointing to another piece folded into a triangle;

12/09/2001: in the various sounds, of traffic, followed seconds later of an automobile starting up, followed immediately by the faint singing from a radio, although there seemed to be nothing on in the house or in the immediate neighborhood;

12/10/2001: in the mailing labels printed alphabetically for 4 different types of letters, several sheets with two labels each and several sheets with 1 label each, and 4 final sheets, two with 1label and two with names but no addresses, 3 runs for 4 letters;

12/11/2001: in the vacuum cleaner, the container of liquid spot remover, and the easel now occupying the unveiled confessional of the convent chapel at St. Mary’s Church in Stamford;

12/12/2001: in the reflection in the evening of one or more headlights of heavy traffic on I95 of the “S” on the overhead highway sign “ Exit 24 Black Rock Turnpike”, beginning at the  right of the “4”, then between the “Black” and the “Rock”, and back over the “Turn”; and, a few miles later, in the arrow of another sign for the same exit beside the “pike” pointing upward; and, later, in the thought that one should not rely exclusively on intelligence to understand why things happen but should pray more often, when an auto appears with a license plate “PRA”, which is the spelling in Webster’s Dictionary of the pronunciation of the word “pray”;

12/13/2001: in the neon sign on Whalley Avenue for the Advance Auto Parts Store with  only the “A” and the “e” lit, the “A” the 1st letter of the alphabet and the “e” the 4th letter from it, the Almighty and the earth;

12/14/2001: in the paper clips strung together at random in the morning on the ground in the form of an alpha and in the evening in the corduroy belt of a bathrobe, tossed on a chair, in the form of an omega; and, in between, during the day, in the 3 triangles of the saw horse, beside a cardboard box; the first by the set of  legs, the bar, and the ground, the other set of legs missing; the second, from the front, by the two legs apart on the ground but together at the top; and the third, again from the front, by the rib supporting the two legs in the center serving as the base in place of the ground;

12/15/2001: in the small candy or pill wrapper outside a door of Our Lady of the Assumption Church falling gently to the ground with no one there to throw it and with the wind too gentle to blow it, settling next to two fronds, one in the shape of a calligraphic “J” for Jesus inside the reversed “C” for Christ of the other, as if arranged by some ancient Irish monk;

12/16/2001: in the square blue emergency light in the bathroom, reflected on the window near it, through which can be seen the conical evergreen tree down the street, bedecked in blue Christmas lights; and in the auto which moves from right to left, followed a moment later, by a man emerging from a house to walk from left to right;

12/17/2001: in the twenty eight pieces of mail placed into an mail box, twice the 14 letters of King David’s name in Greek, which echoes the Gospel from St. Matthew for this day’s reading citing the 14 generations from Abraham to King David, the 14 from King David to the Babylonian Captivity, and the 14 from that Captivity to the birth of the Messiah;

12/18/2001: in the 3 holiday decorations in a parking lot of a shopping mall, each with two stars and a trail, the left one fully lit, the center one partially lit, and on the right, one half  lit with the other half unlit; and, later, in the discarded plastic bottle which points to an 8 cornered gold plastic star on the ground;

12/19/2001: in the reflection of a bank of lights in upper right section of the right lens of the eye glasses upside down on a counter and a black line of the edge of the counter across the top of the left hand bifocal lens;

12/20/2001: in the triangle formed over an auto rooftop by the marquee of a theatre and the ladder, used to replace the lettered panels of the names of what is being shown, leaning against it; and in the 7th space of the 8 across the bottom where the removed panel appears as a cloud of the unknowing; and, later, in the lit Mobil sign advertising diesel fuel at $1.49 per gallon, with two slabs of blue missing over the price and between the “4” and the “9”, forming a white 7, the unity of the triune God and the world;

12/21/2001: in the small bright red piece of paper, caught in a spider web and slightly swaying at a 45 degree angle, pointing to a photograph of a grandson; and in another similar piece caught below almost in the center of a black plastic cup;

12/22/2001: in the 3 sets of banners on poles in the parking lot of a shopping center, the banner in the center, fixed properly between its two poles, but the banner on the right unhinged at the bottom left which has blown back to form a red triangle, and the banner on the left unhooked at both bottoms and wrapped around the top attachment;

12/23/2001: in the sign in the window of a store for rent, tipped on its side, exposing:

                                                  Sale
000

12/24/2001: in the two candy containers, given as Christmas gifts, with six candies left in the container on the left and 7 in the container on the right; and, later, in the 12:22 on the electric clock, late at night, after the overloaded circuit shut down everything electrical, the sum of the hours is 3 for the up and of the minutes is 4 for the down;
