ADVENT 2010

11/28/2010:  in the 2 bloody nicks, representing the 2 natures of Christ, the divine and the human, just above the lip while shaving with new, sharp razor blade, as occasionally has  happened to be corrected by the application of a septic pencil, which now disappear with the washing of the face; later, in the small, somewhat round brown nub of a date, that which joins the stem to the pit appears on a white, square design of a towel, having fallen inadvertently while outside the moon is half full;

11/29/2010:  in the “walk” black letters of a walk sign on a white background of a mouse pad that appears when a black Moleskin is haphazardly placed at an angle with the edge; and, a short time later, in the horizontal head lights of an auto stopped at a red traffic light that appear in the morning mist and in the vertical exhaust fumes in the light of a street light, just after the flashing lights of a truck;

11/30/2010:  in the wooden fish, the secret symbol for Christian catechumens, that announced a hidden Eucharist, to which the cupboard door, having been left open all night, points; and in the light of a porch lamp to which the base of a venetian blind points, the right side of it being lower than the left; and in the three, pink flowers on a branch of an otherwise barren quince bush, which is highly unusual in a Connecticut November;

12/01/2010:  in the beam of diagonal light, which splits apart the square or slightly rectangular, metal section of a school fence with ribs a few inches into two seemingly right triangles, probably from the head lights of an approaching vehicle up a road with a slight incline; and later heard in a locker room of a gym:

A voice:          “He wants to be completely independent.”
Second voice: “I don’t think I have the ability to do that.”

12/02/2010:  in the 3 round black tubes, side by side in the trunk of a pickup truck, with 1 on the top of them, the 3 divine Persons in 1 God, or maybe the 4 corners of the world, above, “Independence”, probably the name of the company, juxtaposed with the bank of seven traffic lights ahead; and, later, in the “- 413- ” sign, the only distinct markings that appear in a small, bent back, roadside, twisted to echo the earlier presentation of the tubes;

12/03/2010:  in an oval that the street light forms with 3 nearby poles on the left side of the road in the early morning, which vanishes while passing by; and in the small rectangle of light on a nearby pole that likewise vanishes; and, somewhat later, in the black wires or cords hung forming dozens of circles; and, later, after lights flashing from a utility truck, in the rear, black brace of the license plate on which usually appears some motto or an advertisement for the auto dealer, “NEW” in white letters followed by letters or words which have been obliterated with black paint or tar, beneath the 777 on the license plate;
12/04/2010:  in the 3 huge dump trucks in tandem, the first passing through a green light while the other 2 stop when it turns red with “War” prominent on the door of the second, in the pinnacle of an arch of the company name, “Sar War Inc”, and “No. 34” on the door of the third in its conjunction of the eternal and the temporal, together with “Advantage”, probably the name of the company;

12/05/2010:  in the 3 discarded, empty bags outside St. Brendan’s Church, one a shopping bag with two others for snacks, one of which is blown forward by the wind to greet a couple approaching the front entrance, and, later when they leave, one of the bags is in the middle of a nearby road, inflated by the wind, which is heard to poop under a passing auto;

12/06/2010:  in the truck parked on the left hand side of the road beside a college dining hall with its back doors open but nothing inside, while another truck also parked on the left somewhat beyond it with its back doors open and displaying a full supply of food products, shortly after the flashing lights on two other trucks; and, later, in the white cloud in a large window of a swimming pool wall above the border of leafless, sleeping trees, which gradually overtakes the one half that was blue sky, while in 3 swimming lanes there are 14 members of the water aerobics class for the 14 generations from Abraham to King David and the 14 generations from David to the Babylonian deportation and the 14 generations from Babylonian deportation to Saint Joseph and the birth of Christ; and in the evening in the sign outside the local office of Fidelity, a mutual fund company, with the all the letters lit except the “L” and the “I”:

Worldly:           or               Spiritual:
  Fraud                                  Faith
  Impurity                             Integrity
  Decadence                          Devotional
  Envy                                   Enraptured
Love                                     Lust
Immortal                              Immorality
Transient                                Temperance
Yowl                                      Yule

12/07/2010:  in the sign on the side of a bus, after the siren and flashing lights of an ambulance, an announcement of a bank: “Make your move now”, across the street from a bicycle chained to a pole with its two tires missing;

12/08/2010:  in the street lights around 3 sides of the New Haven Green, the side for
Government, the side for Commerce and the side for Education, but the lights on the northern side for Justice are out; and in the two cigarette butts about the same size, each half white and half brown, the mouth piece, lying on a sidewalk, one pointing to a vertical, black pole and the other to a nearly round, white plastic container cover, probably the result of someone having stepping on it;

12/09/2010:  in the 3s that appear in the digital dollar positions on all 3 gas pumps at the B. P. Gas Station, indicating the dollar price of the 3 grades of gas, which declared themselves by the 3 in the price slot for cents of the middle pump, written on an oversized poster, neither centered or uniform, stuck over the normal place for the such prices; and, moments later, in the number of a house on its letter box on a nearby street, 3330; and, sometime later, in the sign over an aisle in an office of the Department of Motor Vehicles:
3
Express Lane

12/10/2010:  in the 79 cents that keeps flashing on a supermarket sign and followed by the “$9.99 for Chicken Nuggets”, unaffected after the power outage on a nearby traffic light; and, later, in the 2 Visual Arts Galleries visited in Manhattan, the first at 209 East 23rd Street, the digits of which add to 16 and then to the spiritual 7, for the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit: Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exhortation, Contribution, Leadership and Mercy, and, then, in the second gallery at 601 West 26th Street, the digits of which add to 15 and then to 6, for the six days of creation; and, later, in a restaurant for lunch with a friend on the corner of West 21st Street and 7th Avenue, digits which add to 10, for the Ten Commandments;

12/11/2010:  in the flashing, parking lights of an auto parked parallel with the street on a sidewalk and behind a tree, with each of the two lights on either side of the tree, as seen in the rear view mirror; and, moments later, in the circle of the wheel of a wheel barrow tipped upside down, with the brace at a 45 degree angle with the ground;

12/12/2010:  in the fallen twig, seemingly suspended vertically in thin air, but probably is caught on another branch, gently swaying in the rain with a drop of round rain at its bottom end; and in the three sets of protection containers, probably filled with sand, on an unfinished section of Whalley Avenue, with nothing painted on them except a 4 on the side of one in a group of seven and across the street a 7 on the side of one in a group of four, and farther down the street a 4 on the side of one in a group of three, possibly for the 3 Theological Virtues of Faith, Hope and Charity and the 4 Cardinal Virtues of Justice, Temperance, Prudence, and Fortitude and the 7 for the total of them; and, still later, in the 3 round canisters at the top of a nearby telephone pole to which the remaining portion of a branch of a tree points;

12/13/2010:  in the 7 on the glass door of building with its white rectangular, canvas sign, attached to the outside in only two places, the upper right hand corner and the lower left, allowing one side of it to fall diagonally into an arrow head that points to the holy number on the door; and, later, in the 4 intersecting circles on the front of an Audi auto, parked at the side of a street to which a white cigarette butt lying on the sidewalk points;

12/14/2010:  in the two figures on a sign on the wall of what was a cigar store: 8, for the eight Beatitudes: Blessed are the poor in spirit, the meek, those who mourn, those who hunger for justice, the merciful, the clean of heart, the peacemakers, and those who suffer persecution for justice’s sake, and in what might have been another 8, next to it, with its bottom half obscured, leaving a circle; and in the evening in the 3 small, lit portions on a black, parked car in the shape of an “L”, the 12th letter of the English alphabet, which adds to 3, probably reflections of nearby street lights, the 2 vertical spots point to a bright street light across the street while the 2 somewhat horizontal spots point to a nearby tree;

12/15/2010:  in the red, inflatable tube, about fifteen feet tall, with a face painted on the top and with two small arms that bends in half, when some its air is released and straightens up when a burst of air is pumped into it, a process repeated every few seconds, to call attention to a shop for changing auto engine oil but which suddenly collapses, as though the air was completely released, allowing an arrow at its base to print to “Winterize” on a sign on the side of the shop;

12/16/2010:  in the triangle that a red plastic cord of a refuse bag sticking outside of a container for recyclables makes with its black, top edge; and, later, in the 4 written in chalk beside the 30 also written in chalk on the wall of a building; and, still later, in the 9 letters of a man’s first name and the 7 letters of his middle name and the 4 letters of his last name on an official document with the 9 digits of his identification code;

12/17/2010:  in the isosceles triangle formed by a corner of a mattress thrown haphazardly into a dumpster; and, later, in the 3 autos, to which an empty bottle points, in a 3 space parking area outside a Macy’s store, the middle one in red, and somewhat later, the bottle and the auto the right and the left remain while the auto in the center is now dark grey or maybe light black;

12/18/2010:  in the two square sides of a front porch together with a pole in front of  them lit in the early morning by white Christmas lights and on the top of the pole a globe in  golden glow; and, later, in a shadow on a wall in the shape of the face in Edvard Munch’s painting, “Skrik” (“The Scream” in English), with a large, shadowed “X” within it: no screaming allowed in this Christmas season, or maybe no one should scream or need to scream, ever;

12/19/2010:  in the spider descending from the bathroom ceiling on a string, invisible to the eye, stopping about a foot from the floor, then climbing as if flying up again to a tiny, white blob about 3 feet from the ceiling, and descending again to repeat the activity for 7  times before climbing to the ceiling to scamper away, its duty done; and, later in the 3 nearly perfect circles in a parking space before a health food store: a bottle cap, a spot of black oil, and a white plastic rim of some container;

12/20/2010:  in the 4 horizontal, red lights at the rear top of a bus, for the Gospels of Mathew, Mark, Luke and John, with 4 others, 2 on either side, one above the other, all flashing, with 03 at the center of the bus, the Triune God, the center of the Four Gospels;  and, later, in the bumper sticker among many others on the rear of an auto with a torn but still attached piece of one flapping back and forth in the wind from a 2 on the right to the “T” on the left, the T being the 20th letter of the alphabet, which adds to 2, the dual nature of Christ made manifest in numbers and letters;

12/21/2010:  in the license plate on a white Chevrolet pickup truck, “9CR-180”, three 3s cubed: the number on the left, the sum of the digits on the right, and in the number of the letters of “Chevrolet”; with the “CR” standing for “Christ, Redeemer”; and, in the evening, in the 9 slats about two inches wide on a fence, set apart by 2 missing slats on either side, among dozens of others, all at 45 degree angles with the ground, the 9 pointing to the North Star, the only star visible from that perspective;

12/22/2010:  in the white circle, about the size of a half-dollar on the sidewalk, a few inches away from a white square, somewhat torn in the bushes behind a fence; and, minutes later, in the 4 green traffic lights and in the distance over the street ahead the full moon, somewhat obscured by a cloud; and, later in the evening, in the bright, full moon beside a billboard on which “Relax” is prominently printed;

12/23/2010:  in the empty, discarded beer can on a lawn that points to the vertical, support pole of a fence; and in the tube of hand lotion an a radiator cover that points to a round candle holder on a nearby sink; and in the long, narrow flexible piece of lumber on 2 supports that bends slightly with the left end pointing to a round, flower or small, shrub container of cement;

12/24/2010:  in the dark shades on each of 4 windows in a line of a former Masonic Temple, the one on the far right with a jagged, brown stripe, like the common illustration of a bolt of lightning, that divides the shade into 2 triangles, separating it from the other 3; and, later, in the triangle made by the edge of a locker room bench and the sides of 2 flip-flops that have randomly been tossed;
